Woodstock, NY (September, 2014) -
The Woodstock Film Festival will cap off it's 15th Anniversary at the Woodstock Playhouse on October 19 at 7:30 pm with the THE BETTER ANGELS, written and directed by A.J. Edwards.
THE BETTER ANGELS, which takes its name from a line in Abraham Lincoln's first Inaugural Address, tells the story of Lincoln's childhood in the harsh wilderness of Indiana, the hardships that shaped him and the tragedy that marked him forever. Using black and white cinematography to conjure an America where the land was raw, this film sheds new light on the formative years of the future president and the two women who molded him into one of the most revered men in American history.
The film stars Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, The Great Gatsby), Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Brit Marling (I Origins, Another Earth), and Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games, American Beauty), and was produced by Academy AwardŽ Nominee Terrence Malick (Days of Heaven, Tree of Life), Nicolas Gonda, Jake DeVito and Charley Beil. It was filmed in Ulster County during the fall of 2012 and features many area attractions, including the Mohonk Preserve and Ashokan Field Campus. The Hudson Valley Film Commission provided support, including lodging, location, crew and cast referrals.
"I have never had a better filming experience, ever," wrote producer Charley Beil. "The local community and businesses were extremely helpful and accommodating. It was an absolute pleasure."
Writer and director A.J. Edwards was born in northern California and raised in Texas. He has worked extensively with Terrance Malick, first as an editor on The New World, and then as second-unit director and editor on The Tree of Life, To The Wonder, and the forthcoming Knight of Cups. THE BETTER ANGELS is Edwards's first narrative feature film.
