(Woodstock, NY) Sept. 22, 2009: The 2009 Woodstock Film Festival proudly announces its closing night film, Paramount Pictures’ Up in the Air, co-written by and directed by Jason Reitman, starring George Clooney and Vera Farmiga. The film screens Sunday, October 4th, at the Tinker Street Cinema in Woodstock, NY.
From Jason Reitman, the Oscar®-nominated director of Juno, comes Up in the Air, the timely odyssey of Ryan Bingham (Oscar® winner George Clooney), a corporate downsizer and consummate modern business traveler who, after years of staying happily airborne, suddenly finds himself ready to make a real connection.
When he falls for a simpatico fellow traveler (Vera Farmiga), Ryan’s boss (Jason Bateman), inspired by a young, upstart efficiency expert (Anna Kendrick), threatens to permanently call him in from the road. Faced with the prospect, at once terrifying and exhilarating, of being grounded, Ryan begins to contemplate what it might actually mean to have a home.
"We are thrilled to close this year’s festival with the newest work by one of today’s sharpest directors” stated Woodstock Film Festival Co-Founder/Executive Director Meira Baustein. “By exploring the lives of the people affected by socially relevant issues, Reitman’s films uncover the unexpected human aspect so easily overlooked. Up in the Air’s beauty comes from that human perspective.”
Up in the Air received all-around outstanding reviews at the recently concluded Toronto Film Festival. Richard Corliss of Time Magazine wrote that it was “one of the festival’s and the year’s best movies”…with Clooney offering the “sharpest and most nuanced performance of his career… He and Reitman could close the sale on Oscar night.”
Reitman's screenplay for Up in the Air, co-written by Sheldon Turner, based on the novel by Walter Kirn, has been pronounced “a shoo-in for Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay,” on NPR’s Fresh Air.
Up in the Air is the second Clooney film at this year’s Woodstock Film Festival–(Clooney also stars in the previously announced The Men Who Stare at Goats, directed by Grant Heslov).
Vera Farmiga will participate in a Q&A after the film, as well as in the WFF Actor's Dialogue panel, along with actor/producer Lucy Liu, moderated by entertainment journalist Martha Frankel.
In addition to its closing night film, WFF announced the World Premiere of the stunning documentary REDLIGHT, narrated and produced by Lucy Liu, who is an international child ambassador for UNICEF. Directed by Guy Jacobson and Adi Ezroni, the film uses powerful footage smuggled out of Cambodian brothels, coupled with harrowing testimonials from both former and current child sex slaves in the region. It focuses on the global epidemic of child sexploitation by focusing on the personal stories of several young Cambodian victims and two remarkable advocates for change in Cambodia: grass-roots activist Somaly Mam and politician Mu Sochua. Both have since been nominated for the Noble Peace Prize. Directors Jacobson and Ezroni won the prestigious Global Hero Award for their work on the documentary. Ms. Liu will introduce the film and participate on the Actor's Dialogue panel.
