Who would have thought that of all places, Boise, Idaho, an idyllic town set in America's heartland, would be the country's epicenter of surrogacy? Yet this all-American town is indeed the place where gay couples, singles and those who struggle with infertility go to start their families through surrogacy. With rare access and an empathetic eye, Made in Boise follows four dedicated women who selflessly put themselves forward (sometimes multiple times) to fulfill the dreams of parenthood for those who need assistance. The span of emotions that the surrogates, their families and the perspective parents experience are nakedly on display as they navigate the rigors of pregnancy and the mixed feelings of their loved ones, who sometimes struggle to understand their choice to risk the physical and emotional complications of carrying babies for someone else. A heartfelt story that epitomizes what it is to give of yourself for the happiness of others. —Monique Ray
Beth Aala is a three-time Emmy and Peabody award-winning producer for her work at HBO. Prior to Made in Boise, which she also produced and filmed, Beth co-directed and produced Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman (Discovery). The film follows unlikely conservationists across the country who are leading to preserve and restore America's iconic working landscapes and premiered at Sundance in 2017. She also directed and produced Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon (Toronto, 2014) with comedian Mike Myers for A&E IndieFilms. The documentary is an entertaining portrait of talent manager, Shep Gordon, the most famous man you've never heard of. It won a Hollywood Film award and garnered a 2015 News and Documentary Emmy Awards nomination. Beth lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband and two boys. In her free time she makes woodblock prints, cooks, runs, and takes way too many photos of her kids.
