SYNOPSIS:
Colewell, starring Karen Allen, is a powerful character study of postmistress Nora Pancowski, whose livelihood and sense of community are threatened when officials decide to close her local post office. Nora’s post office is a socializing spot for Colewell’s mostly graying, rural Pennsylvania population; its closure affects not only Nora, but the entire town. Allen’s brilliant portrayal of a reserved, yet resolute woman underscores the importance of our identity, human interaction, and lost time. Although essentially a loner, Nora’s conversations with fellow citizens at work, her endearing friendship with a fellow postal worker, and her interactions with a young footloose woman, who causes Nora to reflect on her own more carefree past, weave a profound story of what makes life worth living. Written and directed by Woodstock Film Festival alum Tom Quinn, Colewell crafts a sensitive and beautiful portrait of an aging woman struggling to hold on and a disappearing life in small town America. —Monique Ray
