We Need Vibes!' writes avant-garde legend Don Cherry to his German pianist and vibraphonist Karl Berger. He follows the call of his bandleader and moves to New York. His best decision! Very few others influenced free improvisation and world music, as did Karl Berger. Classically trained and with a PhD in musicology, he gave up his assistant job with German philosopher Theodor W. Adorno to move to Paris with his wife, singer Ingrid Sertso. Leaving dreary post-war Germany behind, they met their life long collaborator, Don Cherry. In 1971 with the help of Ornette Coleman, they founded the Creative Music Studio (CMS) in Woodstock, New York, a center for free music, improvisation and what later would be labeled ‘world music’. Karl Berger - Music Mind traces the journey from Heidelberg to Paris, New York and onward to Woodstock and documents his celebrated anniversary concert at the 2018 Jazz Festival Stuttgart.
