SCREENWRITING WORKSHOPS: Bearsville and Tribeca First six-week sessions starts July 29 in Bearsville;
July 26 in Tribeca The Woodstock Film Festival is presenting several six-week screenwriting workshops with screenwriter/journalist Lisa Katzman in Bearsville and in New York City (Tribeca). The goal of the workshop is to develop a feature length screenplay. Each workshop is limited to 8 people. Workshop activities are geared for beginners as well as for individuals with some experience in this form of dramatic writing. Sessions will be balanced between working on screenplays through a sharing of work, writing exercises, and a discussion of assigned screenplays and films. Participants need a willingness write regularly outside of class, to share work in class, to be open to the process of hearing and giving feedback, and to re-writing. Ms. Katzman's approach to screenwriting is more eclectic and poetic than formulaic. For instance, she is not an adherent to the Robert McKee approach, though she agrees that important observations about structure can be gleaned from his work (as even Charlie Kaufman proves in Adaptation). Ms. Katzman is especially interested in and useful to those who want to tell personal stories in this medium in unconventional ways. Lisa Katzman has taught in the Graduate Film Program at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, and previously taught screenwriting and other film courses at Bard College. Her screenplay Rachel and Gerard, written for director Charles Burnett, is currently being cast. Two other screenplays by Ms. Katzman: Ruthie's Hair and Tamar's Tale are in development. Ms. Katzman is currently completing Tootie's Last Suit, a documentary she directed for French television about the Black Indians of New Orleans. As a journalist she has written about film for many years for various publications, including The New York Times, Village Voice, Film Comment, Chicago Tribune, and Chicago Reader. In Bearsville the first six-week workshop will be held between Thursday July 29 and Thursday September 2, the second between Thursday September 23 and Thursday October 28. In New York City the first six-week workshop will be held between Monday July 26 through Monday August 23, and the second between Monday September 13 through Monday October 18. (All workshops sessions will meet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.). Registrants can contact the Woodstock Film Festival

Detrixhe, MFA 2003 New York University Graduate Film, currently writing for Gigantic Pictures "Lisa's course turns the key to writing that screenplay in your mind." Steve Gottlieb, playwright "With attention and generosity, Lisa draws out the subtle strengths of stories, and guides the group toward writing that is intelligent, coherent, and evocative."
