LOCAL HUDSON VALLEY FILMS MAKE THEIR MARK ON 13TH ANNUAL WOODSTOCK FILM FESTIVAL

Woodstock, NY (Sept. 18, 2012) Passionately committed to supporting regional filmmakers and film production, the 2012 Woodstock Film Festival presents an array of features, documentaries, shorts and music videos filmed in the beautiful Hudson Valley area. This year, Hudson Valley feature length docs and narratives steal the show, demonstrating how much the region, including the Hudson Valley Film Commision, bring to the independent film community.

HUDSON VALLEY NARRATIVES

FIRST WINTER directed by Benjamin Dickinson
*In competition for best cinematography and best narrative
*Filmed in Campbell Hall, NY and other locations in Orange County

A record snowstorm strikes while a group of Brooklynites slumber at their farmhouse yoga retreat one winter, blocking roads, shutting off power, and turning the drug, sex, and privileged organic lifestyle they are accustomed to into a back-to-basics fight for survival. Running out of both food and time, the group finds themselves forced to face the harsh realities within themselves and of those around them as alliances crumble, ideals are tested, and they begin to accept their mortality. Filmed in Orange County, with brilliant wintery landscapes and a quiet, realistic approach, First Winter Benjamin Dickinson’s directorial debut, shows what happens when one is pushed to their limit under extraordinary circumstances.

FRANCINE directed by Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky
East Coast Premiere
*Filmed in Ulster County

Academy Award® winner Melissa Leo gives a fierce and restrained performance as Francine, a woman struggling to find her place in a downtrodden lakeside town after leaving behind a life in prison. Taking a series of jobs working with animals, Francine turns away others and instead seeks intimacy in the most unlikely of places. Gritty, elliptical, and voyeuristic, Francine is a portrait of a near-silent misfit and her fragile first steps in an unfamiliar world.

IN OUR NATURE directed by Brian Savelson
East Coast Premiere
*Filmed in Mount Tremper, NY and other locations in Ulster County

Nothing seems more capable of ruining Seth’s romantic weekend with his girlfriend, Andie, than his estranged father and young girlfriend crashing the party. Brian Savelson’s feature debut, In Our Nature is the story of troubled relationship between a father and his son. Seth (Zach Gilford) attempts to reconnect with his distant father, Gil (John Slattery), despite the presence of their respective girlfriends (played by Gabrielle Union and Jena Malone). Meanwhile, the women often find themselves similarly trapped within the issues surfacing between their partners, creating a dynamic and dramatic setting for the film to play its course. Filmed locally in Mt. Tremper, the film casts a beautiful lens on the Hudson Valley’s while also providing humor and drama. Outside the city and immersed in the natural surroundings of a family country house, In Our Nature is a realistic depiction of human nature when there is nothing else to turn to.

World Premiere
*Filmed in Kerhonkson, NY and other locations in Ulster County and New York City

When two best friends’ dreams of becoming actors in NYC seem to be going nowhere, they decide to take things to the edge and push them right over. From emergency preparation drills to people-watching on the stoop of their Brooklyn apartment in Slankets, they march to the strum of their own ukulele. When Ted (Paul Iacono) moves in next door, his sophistication and connections to celebrities lead Z and G to conclude that he must be a talent agent. Lacking other professional options, they decide to take the only reasonable course of action: kidnap him, hold him hostage, and demand acting careers as ransom.

HUDSON VALLEY DOCUMENTARIES

"DEAR GOVERNOR CUOMO..." directed by Jon Bowermaster
World Premiere
*Filmed in Albany, NY and other locations

On a rainy night in May, a unique coalition of musicians, scientists and activists gathered in Albany on the governor's front door step, calling for a ban on hydraulic-fracturing. With the news that Governor Andrew Cuomo might lift the moratorium on fracking in New York any day, the event was assembled in less than a month. Two rehearsals in twenty-four hours, and it was show time.

The goal of the extremely varied participants, many of whom had never met before this night, was to explain in clear terms the threats of fracking and to motivate people to rise up against the practice using song. The cord that bound them all was that they were first and foremost New Yorkers. New Yorkers Against Fracking.

Under the musical direction of Hudson Valley resident Natalie Merchant, the event was filmed by Academy Award® winning documentarian Alex Gibney. The film features actors Mark Ruffalo and Melissa Leo, environmental biologist Sandra Steingraber and musicians ranging from Joan Osborne and Citizen Cope to Medeski Martin and Wood and The Felice Brothers. The film was written and directed by Hudson Valley filmmaker Jon Bowermaster.

ONCE IN A LULLABY:THE PS 22 CHORUS STORY directed by Jonathan Kalafer
*Edited by Red Hook's own Devin Pickering and scored by Kingston's Danny Pickering

More than a feel good movie about kids and school, Once in a Lullaby: The PS 22 Chorus Documentary, goes to the heart of the purpose of education.

The fifth grade PS 22 Chorus from Staten Island is preparing for a performance at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards ceremony. The story is set into motion by PS22 Chorus' vibrant performances on their viral YouTube videos. Driven by the vision and passion of an unconventional music teacher who encourages students to connect to their own spirit and to perform from the inside out, Once in a Lullaby captures the journey of children whose complex life circumstances need the power of music to elevate and focus them at a time when they are making the transition to their middle school years.

Jonathan Kalafer, in his first feature film, wonderfully captures the inside story behind the PS22 Chorus' power to attract its growing internet audience and in the process makes a compelling case for keeping the arts in schools. –Maria Marewski
