SYNOPSIS:
"Halfway" is a quietly tense drama built around a powerhouse performance by Quinton Aaron ("The Blind Side"). Aaron plays Byron, a casualty of the failed American prison system, transplanted to rural Wisconsin to work on his white stepbrother's farm as a means of staying on the straight-and-narrow. Byron's dark skin and massive physique stand in stark contrast to the conservative locals, but that's okay; bottle-feeding calves and shoveling shit offer a welcomed respite as he attempts to adapt to life on probation despite pressure from old pals and an unforeseen discovery in his new environment.

Writer-director Ben Caird effectively employs a naturalistic style that often leaves us wondering whether we're watching a documentary. Caird holds his cards close to the vest and allows tensions to simmer just below the surface, slowly revealing an unforgiving world where broken people struggle not to repeat the mistakes of the past. Unfortunately, the deck is stacked against them. --Jon Greenhalgh
