SYNOPSIS:
Ex-con short order cook Nick has a lot on his plate - "Pops," his fragile live-in father descending into Alzheimers, an ex-wife, Vic, who left him for Frenchwoman Celine, and an eleven-year-old daughter he hasn't seen since she was a baby and who now identifies as a boy. Eking out a living in a crumbling town where both sides of the tracks are bad, Celine drops a bombshell - Vic has had a small stroke and Nick needs to care for mother and daughter while she's away on business. Nick embarks on a crash course in fatherhood while facing the loss of his own father. John Adams hits all the right notes as Nick, along with a strong supporting cast. Unhurried dissolves move through time and space, while a tasty montage midway literally keeps the ball rolling. This is a deeply moving film exploring second chances and promises that are hard to keep. --Barbara Pokras, ACE
BIO:
John Adams, Toby Poser and their daughters, Lulu and Zelda, are a filmmaking family under the creative marquis of Wonder Wheel Productions. They have four features under their belts: "Rumblestrips, " "Knuckle Jack," "The Shoot," all earning a hearty reception on the indie festival circuit, including Best in Show and Audience awards, and their latest, "Halfway to Zen." For each they've employed the same DIY ethic: between the four of them, they write, direct, produce, shoot, edit, and act. Adams serves as DP and also composes the music and edits; Poser produces. When not in front of the camera, they all shoot and record sound - the kids (aged 17 and 12) included. The family lives in Topanga, CA, and the Catskill Mountains of New York, where Adams and Poser are currently at work on their fifth and sixth features.
