Virgil First Raise wakes in a ditch on the plains of Montana, battered and hung-over. His wife has left him and taken his beloved rifle.
Virgil embarks on a wild and darkly comic odyssey fueled by alcohol to retrieve the rifle. Ultimately, he finds himself.
Adapted from the celebrated novel of the same name, Winter in the Blood is largely a visualization of internal memories and thoughts. The audience is never quite sure what is real and what isn’t because Virgil isn’t so sure either.
Filmed on location in Montana, with gorgeous cinematography and a haunting and evocative score, this is a melancholic and surreal depiction of a distraught hero trying to make peace with his past and his identity. –Eliza Kunkel
The Brothers Smith hail from western Montana. Winter in the Blood is their second feature. They wrote & directed the award-winning The Slaughter Rule, starring David Morse and Academy Award Nominees Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams, which premiered at Sundance and went on to play all over the world. It won the FIPRESCI International Critic’s Prize, and and was nominated for the John Cassavetes Indie Spirit Award. Their ‘eco-rotic’ short film the keening premiered at Sundance 2000.
As screenwriters, the Brothers Smith were chosen for Variety’s "Ten Screenwriters To Watch." They are writing a contemporary western TV series. They recently wrote Walking Out for acclaimed filmmaker Rodrigo Garcia and adapted the graphic novel Son of the Gun by legendary cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky for Fox Searchlight. They have collaborated with Terrance Malick, Lars Van Trier and David O. Russell and have written scripts for Columbia Pictures, HBO, Warner Brothers, Framestore, Disney and ESPN Films.
