SYNOPSIS:
One would be hard-pressed to find a more irreverent duo than equal-opportunity offenders Bill Maher and Larry Charles. Maher travels the world spreading the gospel of "doubt" while shattering the myths of religion. There are plenty of laughs, but it's not all comedy as usual. "Religion must die for mankind to live," contends Maher, and he makes his case at such outrageous venues as a Truckers' Chapel in Raleigh, N.C., the Holyland Experience, an elaborate Floridian theme park, and in conversation with Senator Mark Pryor who declares, "You don't have to pass an IQ test to be in the Senate." Says Maher, "One thing I hate more than prophesy is self-fulfilling prophesy." The true apocalypse is of our own making, through beliefs that one's religion justifies killing, wars and self-fulfilling prophesies of doom. Lovers of "Real Time" will relish spending time with the irascible, rational, and very funny Bill Maher. (Barbara Pokras, A.C.E.)
