"Hippie Masala" translates as "Forever in India," a choice made by some of the millions of Flower Children who flocked to India in the 1960s and 70s. Indian peasants assumed that a severe drought in the West was the reason for their migration. India's holy men saw it, more accurately, as a search for spirituality. And those who stayed on shared a profound need for personal freedom, as well as a love of drugs and/or spirituality. Cesare, an Italian expatriate, emaciated and hunched over, sacrifices -personal identity in order to immerse himself in yoga. Robert from Holland, a gifted painter, lives with a wife and young children. Meera, a recluse, seeks enlightenment on her own. Hanspeter, a Swiss, reveals a dark side as he farms and builds an elaborate home. And Erica and Gillian, South African sisters, seek the world's party spots. A fascinating chronicle, beautifully shot and meticulously crafted. (Barbara Pokras, A.C.E.)
