SYNOPSIS:
Derrick and Tico's friendship was like any other. Best buds from a young age, the two navigate their way through the city streets together, discussing women and dreams of getting rich. But when Derrick and Tico lose their jobs in the wake of 9/11, their worlds are turned upside-down and they must struggle to keep their lives and friendship from falling to pieces. Looking for a quick solution, Tico turns to petty crime and trickery, while the more responsible Derrick very carefully weighs the pros and cons of taking on his greatest fear, which, he feels, may be his only option: joining the U.S. Army. Gritty, streetwise, and yet sensitive, director Ilya Chaiken tells the intimate and touching tale of two men fighting to keep it together in a world that is falling apart. Featuring pointedly solid performances from Al Thompson and newcomer Kareem Savinson, "Liberty Kid" is a potent slice of life with an engagingly, timely twist that feels very close to home. (Michael Lerman)
