SYNOPSIS:
Inspired by the life and many lives of Bob Dylan, "I'm Not There" is an unconventional journey. Six actors portray Dylan as a series of shifting personas, weaving together a rich and colorful portrait of this ever-elusive American icon. The seven different identities are braided together, seven organs pumping through one life story, as dense and vibrant as the era it inspired. The film stars Ben Wishaw as a renegade symbolist poet, Marcus Carl Franklin as a precocious train-hopper, Christian Bale as the herald of the protest-music scene, and later as a born-again Christian, Julianne Moore as a folk-singing champion, Heath Ledger as an actor and motorcycle enthusiast, and Cate Blanchett as an increasingly nihilistic persona. Evading emotional attachments and basic self-preservation, his dangerous game propels him into existential breakdown. This last character (Richard Gere) is discovered in full retreat from the world. But events force him to abandon sanctuary and continue moving on...
BIO:
Oscar-nominated writer-director Todd Haynes' short film "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story" has become an underground cult classic. Haynes' first feature, "Poison," was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 1991. His short film "Dottie Gets Spanked" was hailed by The Village Voice as "A Pop Art vision of 50s suburbia." His second feature, "Safe," was named Best Film of the Year by leading critics. Haynes' third feature, the rock drama "Velvet Goldmine" (1997), was honored at Cannes with an award for Best Artistic Contribution. "Far From Heaven," his fourth feature, starred Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid and Dennis Haysbert, and swept critics awards across the country. Far From Heaven was recognized with four Academy Award nominations, including a Best Actress nod for Moore and a screenwriting nomination for Haynes.
