MAN ON WIRE

On August 7th 1974, Philippe Petit, stepped out on a steel cable illegally rigged between New York’s Twin Towers, then the world’s tallest buildings. After nearly an hour of performing on the high wire, he was arrested, taken for psychological evaluation, and brought to jail for the spectacular event that became known as “the artistic crime of the century.” Based on Petit’s book To Reach the Clouds (newly released in paperback and re-titled Man on Wire), the film provides a rare glimpse into this audacious high-wire world with still photographs, stunning footage and reenactments. With interviews shot in the Catskill Region of upstate New York, Petit relives his WTC adventure, “To me, it's really so simple, that life should be lived on the edge. You have to exercise rebellion. To refuse to taper yourself to the rules, to refuse your own success, to refuse to repeat yourself, to see every day, every year, every idea as a true challenge. Then you will live your life on the tightrope.”

Up against The Betrayal (Nerakhoon), which screened at the 2008 Woodstock Film Festival, and other noted documentaries like Werner Herzog’s Antarctica film Encounters at the End of the World, MAN ON WIRE took home the 2009 Academy Award® for “Best Documentary Feature,” an award also won in previous years by films like An Inconvenient Truth and March of the Penguins.

In addition to walking the high wire, Philippe writes, draws, gives lectures and workshops, performs close-up magic and street-juggling, practices lock-picking and 18th-Century timber framing, plays chess, studies French wines and was once seen bullfighting in Peru. Philippe is a born multi-talented artist who is sure to engage his audience in an inspiring Q&A.

ABOUT PHILIPPE PETIT:

Philippe Petit, universal poet laureate of the high wire, was born in France. He took his first steps on the wire at age 16, and while performing on five continents, he taught himself Spanish, German, Russian and English, and developed a keen appreciation for architecture and engineering.

Petit is most known for his 1974 walk on a high wire illegally stretched between the rooftops of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, making eight crossings over the course of an hour, a quarter mile above the sidewalks of New York. He’s performed on the high wire more than 80 times around the globe, crowning such architectural monuments as Notre Dame Cathedral and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Philippe was presented with the prestigious James Parks Morton Interfaith Award and was recently made Chevalier des Arts & des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.

His book, To Reach the Clouds (newly released in paperback and re-titled Man on Wire), which recounts Philippe’s WTC adventure, is the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary film, Man On Wire, as well as a feature film with a tentative release date of 2012. Philippe continues to give lectures and workshops internationally and his seventh book, L’Art du Pickpocket, was recently published in Paris; he is now at work on his eighth, On Building a Barn.
